POPPY N+Z est un projet de performance chorégraphique (sonore et vocale) entre deux danseurs (Bi-Jia WANG et Marius Swadogo) et deux "Poppy" (robots open source développés par le laboratoire Flowers de l’INRIA de Bordeaux).  Il cherche à travailler la question du langage chorégraphique comme langage transdisciplinaire et transculturel possible entre humain et robot.

Trois tableaux sont proposés : un tableau de danse contact entre les danseurs et les robots ; un tableau d'histoire dansée des danses populaires mêlées les unes aux autres avec les danseurs et les robots ; un tableau avec une improvisation philosophique.

À partir de mots découpés en éléments simples, les phonèmes, les robots interprètent une suite de mots selon un répertoire gestuel programmé. Les instructions sont données en direct par des programmeurs. Les danseurs ont eux aussi un répertoire de gestes dansés composé préalablement à partir de la résonance des mots dans leur corps. Ce répertoire est interprété lors de la performance de manière non linéaire et en interaction avec les robots.

Il en va de même pour la musique de Benoît Bottex qui suite les mêmes principes compositionnels et interprétatifs bien qu'il ne s'agisse pas d'une transposition ou d'une illustration du répertoire de mots et de gestes.

Quant à la philosophie, il s'agit de tenter de produire un "discours" qui puisse faire sens dans un cadre à la fois ouvert - celui de l'improvisation et de la scène du spectacle vivant - et très contraignant (répertoire de mots, de gestes, limites spatiales et temporelles, musique et perturbations physiques, aucun support de parole).

L'ensemble est une performance improvisée.

À la suite d'une série de résidences de recherche et de création la première du spectacle a eu lieu le 20 janvier 2017 au Dôme de Talence.

Grâce à l'invitation de Emmanuelle Grangier, POPPY N+Z est la troisième forme que prend le projet de conférence/performance commencé en 2014 sur l'improvisation de la pensée en dialogue avec la technologie.

POPPY N+Z is a choreographic performance project (sound and vocal) between two dancers (Bi-Jia Wang and Marius Swadogo) and two "Poppys" (open-source robots developed by the Flowers laboratory at INRIA Bordeaux). It explores the question of choreographic language as a possible transdisciplinary and transcultural language between humans and robots.

Three scenes are presented: a contact improvisation scene between the dancers and the robots; a dance history scene of folk dances interwoven with each other by the dancers and the robots; and a scene with a philosophical improvisation.

Using words broken down into simple elements, phonemes, the robots interpret a sequence of words according to a programmed gestural repertoire. The instructions are given live by programmers. The dancers also have a repertoire of dance gestures composed beforehand based on the resonance of the words in their bodies. This repertoire is performed non-linearly and in interaction with the robots.

The same is true for Benoît Bottex's music, which follows the same compositional and interpretive principles, although it is not a transposition or illustration of the repertoire of words and gestures.

As for the philosophy, it involves attempting to produce a "discourse" that can make sense within a framework that is both open—that of improvisation and the live performance stage—and highly constrained (repertoire of words and gestures, spatial and temporal limits, music and physical disturbances, no spoken word).

The entire piece is an improvised performance.

Following a series of research and creation residencies, the show premiered on January 20, 2017, at the Dôme de Talence.

 

Thanks to Emmanuelle Grangier's invitation, POPPY N+Z is the third iteration of the lecture/performance project begun in 2014, exploring the improvisation of thought in dialogue with technology.
